For the 1st time in a thousand years, children are not expected to outlive their parents. Why? Mainly because of the toxic chemicals we are ingesting on a daily basis. People are getting breast cancer among many other ailments from all of the plastic residues we ingest from the packaging of our store bought food.
We have a right, as consumers, to have safe and standardized food containers that do not leak chemicals into foods and that are also 100% recyclable. Demanding that companies use safe and standard packaging is our right. Companies that decide to use cheaper and unsafe packaging should be banned from selling their product in all Canadian stores until they adopt the new standard of packaging. At the very least, the unsafe packaging should be labeled in much the same way as cigarettes are labeled - warning that the consumption of this food due to packaging, could be hazardous to one’s health.
We think ALL food companies should have safe food storage at the top of their priorities along with of course the quality of the food being packaged. The safest containers at this point seem to be glass, stainless steel, and Tetra-Paks.
Here are some companies already taking the initiative...
Eden Foods, a subsidiary of Hain Celestial, is using oleoresin linings for its bean products.
Muir Glen organics began packaging tomatoes in cans that are BPA-free, starting in 2010; cans that have an expiration date of 2013 or later are reportedly BPA-free, though otherwise unmarked as such.
