BIG CHANGES START WITH SMALL STEPS! Even if you don’t live in Richmond VA this will still be good for you too down the road. A ripple effect can only happen if I can get enough people to demand that at least one store is going to take a step right now to make lasting change in America. I want to do my part to make headway in the United States to get mandatory labeling for Genetically Modified foods so I am starting a petition to ask my local Whole Foods Market to add a sticker (GMO FREE) to the price labeling in front of items sold that do NOT have GMO ingredients. I feel like this will be positive reinforcement to the companies that strive to produce the healthiest food possible and will be more likely to be accepted by WF management. Whole Foods Market claims to be "America’s Healthiest Grocery Store". While this may be true it is misleading to consumers who shop there and take for granted that "everything" is healthy. Even a store like WF sells Genetically Modified Foods along with fruits and veggies that contain pesticides. Don't get me wrong. I LOVE Whole Foods and I am so happy that they have a store right where I live in Richmond Virginia. It did, however, take me a while to realize that just because they sell it doesn’t make it healthy. We should know what's in our food! Myself and many others were very sad the day that Proposition 37 was defeated in California. It's not like I thought that one day GMO’s would be labeled in California and soon after Virginia would follow. Maybe in 25 years! At least it would have been incredible progress for our country considering we are mostly unaware of what GMO's are. 64 countries around the world have significant restrictions and or outright bans on Genetically Modified Foods. We are lagging behind Mexico, China, Russia and many others when it comes to understanding what is happening to food in our world. Profits are put directly before the health and safety of the public and the environment. Monsanto is a corporation that holds the GMO seed patient around the world. They also sell the most widely used pesticides. These seeds are modified so the vegetables they grow into can be drowned in endless amounts of pesticides and not die. So Monsanto owns a sells as seed that is designed to increase the sales of pesticides endlessly! Brilliant if all you care about is making money but horrible for the planet and everyone on it. Pesticides for non-gmo fruits and veggies are already a problem. One non-organic apple is known to have residue of about 14 different variations of pesticides! (See EWG's guide to pesticides in produce) If you are already aware of this than please sign my petition. If you are not than I encourage you to research this information for yourself- then PLEASE sign this petition! If this step toward progress happens in Richmond Virginia than it can happen everywhere.
