Lancaster, PA is a two-hour car ride from Perry County, PA. Newport, PA is in the Southeastern portion of Perry County and has a delapidated train deport next to the Amtrak rails. Amtrak runs several times a day from Harrisburg, PA to Lancaster, PA.
With the addition of a stop at Newport, PA, the train could be utilized by the local 166 Amish families as a much-needed mass transit facility. Currently, the traffic between Lancaster County and Perry County is with private individual automobiles and special leased bus companies. The cost is prohibitive for many familieis as well as the amount of vehicles on an already busy stretch of roadway could easily lead to increased roadway accidents.
The people of Perry and the many Lancaster County public that visit Perry respectfully request the opening of a terminal at the Newport, PA site, The Amish are even more than willing to renovate the site and make it usable if Amtrak will okay the project and add at least two morning and two evenings stops at Newport, PA Suggested times would be 5:30 am for the workers that regularly commute and another at 7:30 am for visitors that travel into Lancaster. Lancaster, PA departures back to Perry would be suggested as 5:30pm and again 7:30pm. Saturdays and Sundays are included in their travels as well as the normal weekdays.
