A recent commercial for the popular nationwide retail chain Target is disrespectful of Asian-Americans. In the commercial, a young Asian boy is shown with a new toy samurai sword set whilst the words “I'm ninja kickin' through the halls” is sung by children.
Though the ad is less than twenty seconds, it still manages in that short time to disgustingly portray and perpetuate an erroneous, ethnically insensitive stereotype- that an Asian boy would dream of and aspire to become a ninja, or pretend to be one.
This portrayal of a young Asian boy is irresponsible. This commercial should be pulled from the airwaves and an apology should be given by the Target Corporation for its behavior.
