Commercial developer giant RioCan wants to build a Wal-Mart in Kensington Market. A three story shopping mall, including a suburban sized Wal-Mart is in the works for the western border of Toronto's Kensington Market. Tell RioCan that this will kill local business and change this vibrant neighbourhood!
The development has already hit some roadblocks and yet RioCan continues to bully its way through. Despite initially being rejected by governing bodies, RioCan still fighting to develop the area.
60% of Torontonians polled in a June 25th phone survey are against the proposed Wal-Mart near Kensington Market, with majorities of respondents from all corners of the city disapproving of the development. Not only are locals against this, but Torontonians from across the city.
RioCan, this is not the place for a mega development. City Councilor Adam Vaughan noted at a public meeting, that Wal-Mart is known to use predatory pricing and other practices that put small independent stores out of business. Small businesses are the heart of the vibrant, family friendly neighbourhood and RioCan's plans will destroy them.
This issue isn't just about Kensington Market, it's about all the small towns and neighbourhoods that large corporations bulldoze every year.
Tell RioCan that you support Torontonians and are against big business in our communities.
